He'd jilted her at the altar, though, afraid that his life with her would resemble that of his parents, who were miserable, his father a drunken lout and his mother a lazy harpy. Jilting Anya had been a major mistake, resulting, among other horrors, in Anya's having sent Willow into a demon dimension from which Buffy had been able to retrieve her only at the cost of both her physical safety and the loss of her virtue. Before their escape, Buffy and Willow alike had experienced extreme humiliation and degradation at the hands of the devil-king Baphomet and his army of lesser demons. In the process, Buffy had discovered Xander's bisexuality, having walked in on him while he was butt-fucking his friend, Chester.

Fortunately, neither Buffy nor Xander remembered anything that had happened during this adventure-or misadventure-because Willow, at Buffy's request, had deleted their memories of the horrible events. Only the witch recalled what had happened to them, but neither Buffy nor Xander were aware that Willow still knew the truth about what had taken place both in the demon dimension and in Xander's basement apartment.

Anya had had the most exasperating, but endearing, way of blurting out her observations and opinions about everything, including sex, and, until Xander taught the demon the difference between public and private behavior, she'd often commented freely-and publicly-about the sexual conduct between them, announcing with wide-eyed innocence how much Xander had improved in performing cunnilingus, complimenting him on his proficiency in accommodating her strap-on dildo, or noting his difficulty in staying erect one night. Talk about embarrassment! Talk about humiliation! Talk about mortification!

Nevertheless, Xander had loved Anya, right up to the point that he'd lost her forever to the Harbinger's sword that had cut her in two during the Scoobies' last and greatest fight against the Hellmouth's nightmarish army.
