Then make my way into the back, where I would clean all the patio furniture, including the glass table sitting on the back deck. If the deck itself were in need of a good cleaning, I would whip out the hose and some bleach, and spray that down as well. Then there was the pool, which really only required me to scoop out any debris with the net and handle the chlorine too; it was all pretty easy, when it came down to it.
In those few weeks that went by, I also started getting close with Jennifer. We would hang out late at night, sitting out in the yard by the fire pit and just talking. Jennifer would always sip at a glass of wine and often, offered me a beer, even though I was still only twenty years old. I never accepted the offer though. I had never been much of a drinker myself, in the first place.
One night, we were sitting by the fire pit like always. Jennifer was a bit drunk and my dad, was weighing heavily on her mind. She had been pretty upset, since she threw him out of the house and on a few occasions, she had even considered taking him back.
My father was pretty pissed off at me, since I had been the one to talk her out of inviting him back.
Tonight, she was going through yet another of those moments where all she could think about, was taking him back again. This time though, I was finding it a little difficult to talk her down.
"You don't need him," I insisted.
Jennifer shook her head, wiping tears from her eyes and leaning forward in her lawn chair.
"I feel like I do...I loved him Michael. We were together for ten years, he was my world."
"He didn't feel the same for you though," I countered.
"You and I both know, he was only in it for the money."
"I know that," Jennifer replied. "It's sad but...I almost don't care."
I sighed, shaking my head and sliding forward to the edge of my seat.
"Jennifer, listen to me...you don't need my father. He's a fucking douche bag, and he treats you like shit."
Jennifer relaxed some, sipping at her wine and setting the glass down on the small table to her left.
