Darkness
The engine warning light was blinking rapidly, its red urgency causing a rising panic in Jack. Limited mechanical knowledge, an unknown area of the county, pitch blackness and hammering rain, none of these signs a good omen.He groaned inwardly as the engine coughed, spluttered and then just cut out. Having just cressted a small rise, he let the car gently coast to the bottom of the hill, steering it as close to the hedge as possible, without hitting it, so not to block completely the country lane he was currently on.He slapped the steering wheel hard, before resting his head on it, he was certainly going to he late now and he felt his mood darken.Sitting up straight, he sighed and reached for his mobile, nestling in the side door pocket. The screen was ominously black. That was odd. He thumbed the on switch, anticipating the harsh glare of the light as the screen came alive, but nothing. He stared at it and then swore out loud "Fuck!" As he realised there was no charge.He lent his head on the hard steering wheel, before banging on it twice, before resting. He listened to the hammering of the rain on the roof and windscreen and came to the realisation that, like the car, the rain was going no where in a rush.Ten minutes later and he decided he needed to act. Grabbing his jacket off the back seat, he slowly opened the car door and felt the first stinging drops of heavy rain. Holding the jacket above his head, he stepped out into the down pour.Looking up and down the lane he saw no signs of life. Knowing that he had not passed any dwellings in the last 45 minutes, he decided he needed to continue in the direction he had been travelling.Already wet through, he set off at a pace to find some help.
By the time Jack had put his foot into the third deep puddle that overwhelmed his shoe, he was regretting his decision to abandon the dryness of his car.Maybe he should have sat tight and wait for a passing motorist to flag down, but then again no one had passed him in the last half hour he had been walking.
