A Line in the Sand

The Line in the Sand

In my youth the relationship between the Black community of heterosexuals and the members of other branches of human sexuality was complex and delicate at best. The biblical interpretations of sexual laws coupled with the slavery based abuse of Blacks involving gender identification made sexuality outside of the supposedly standard parameters something frowned upon if not outright hostilely opposed. Some neutral spaces and occasions allowed for comfortable interactions (Mardi Gras, Halloween, entertainment venues, etc.) but they were always minimal.

New Orleans’ Dew Drop Inn was a small business complex with a motel, barber shop, and performance space. Most of the Black touring major stars performed there during the segregation era simply because there were few venues the performers could present their acts at, especially if there was any suspicion about them not being “straight”. Between the big-time shows the regional stars put on show sets that included gay and lesbian artists whose material was played on local radio.

One weekend Little Richard came there to entertain the locals. I really enjoyed hearing him and took the opportunity to go hear and see him perform. What he did in that setting far exceeded anything I expected and it had me moving from smiles to belly laughing. Now the audience was very sharply dressed, with suits and premium quality dresses being the minimum, as many in attendance were in tuxedos or ballroom gowns. Hence, people spent as much time taking in the audience as they did the band and singers. I took special notice of a young petite lady in a startling evening gown that frankly was quite racy for that day. It exposed a lot of skin under lace that triggered erotic desire on a very high level. I could barely keep my eyes off of her.

In the middle of the show a waitress brought me a fresh beverage. When I said I did not order it, she pointed to the lady and said she had sent it. I rose, bowed to her , and lifted the glass in appreciation, feeling quite flattered.
